Instant Messaging

At my last gig in Corporate America I began to appreciate the benefits of Instant Messaging. Similar to the cartoon many of IM'ed each other as we sat in on video conference calls.. often commenting on the content of the call but also just chit-chatted.

My second experience involved IM conversations with my son when he was in Iraq.. we even included video on one occasion. These sessions were so meaningful to me as it brought the two of us close in times of intense struggle for him.

Have you ever IM'ed? Any experiences you'd like to share?

  1. I IM all the time. And with iChat on my Mac, I can even do an audio conversation while I'm sitting here doing shipping labels.

  2. IM is the way around my work. Back when my boss was a lady, one guy thought she looked really good on a particular day. The danger about IM is that when you are thinking about a person, but intending to send a message to another, you end up sending it to the subject. This guy sent an IM to all of our boss explaining and very crude terms how good she looked. Luckily for him, she said thank you. I have had some goofs myself, like when I thought my supervisor didn't have a clue, and I let her know by mistake.

  3. My wife used IM a lot on her group senior project for finishing up her bachelors (only 4 more weeks!). That got me thinking, so I installed it at work and asked her to as well. It's a nice way for use to shoot little note about who's going to pick up the kids or what not. We're both a bit introverted by nature, so it helps keep us close through the day. I miss it on days like to day when she's at a client's and can't connect to the web.

  4. I IM all the time both at work and in my personal life. It's a great way to get questions answered quickly but also a fun way to have conversations with the whole extended family.
