Is there a biblical significance of tonight's blood moon?

Four minutes of sound teaching by our pastor. Worth the watch.

Validation

I just had to repost! The absolute best 16 minutes of YouTube that I have ever seen!
If you watch it please share one word that you feel describes the video. Happy Friday!

Fear, Islam, 9/11 and a Reason to Believe

Irshad Manji made an interesting observation on Morning Joe this week when asked about how the perceptions of Islam have changed since that tragic day ten years ago.
I think there is still far more confusion than there is clarity. I’ll say something else, and to me it’s the most dangerous F-word in the entire English language…but that word is ‘fear.’ I see among broad-hearted Americans -- who are non-Muslim – fear about asking questions of Muslims and Islam because they’re afraid of being judged as bigots for doing so. And I see among liberal Muslims, such as myself, fear of going on the record about our views because we fear either being called traitors by Islam supremacists or terrorists-in-waiting by Islam bashers."
It is interesting how fear plays such an integral part of the way that we have responded to the terrorism of September 11, 2001. Many of the email messages I receive about Islam are based in fear. So, in light of that, I thought that I would share a song in video, titled "Reason to Believe", that was written, and sung here, by Joe Scarborough, the host of Morning Joe.

I pray for our nation that we will move forward out of fear and suspicion to faith and love.

Netflix Cashes In

A few years ago my daughter bought me a Netflix subscription for Father's Day. I kept the subscription and have enjoyed getting DVDs in the mail and occasionally view streaming videos - I watched the latest Star Trek video there a few weeks ago.

Yesterday Jessie Becker, Netflix's vice president of marketing, announced that rates are going up again at that juggernaut of all things video. They are splitting their DVD and streaming services and each will cost you $7.99 per month - a total of $15.98 if you have both plans. I read a few of the over one thousand (and counting) comment reactions on Mr Baker's blog post and found this one to be interesting:
Yes, be a good service long enough to run Mom and Pop video stores (and even Blockbuster) into bankruptcy, then once things are looking up, the gloves are off and aimed at the customers.
I had not thought about that aspect of this announcement. I have to admit that the end result here seems to agree with that comment. I know that I have not used my Blockbuster account since I joined Netflix. I guess I am wondering if the new rates have been in the mind of Netflix strategists all along or if they have simply found themselves in a place where they can cash in big time. As for me, I doubt that I will keep the streaming services but I may stay with the DVDs as we generally watch a DVD or two a week.

Do you have a Netflix account? How will you react to this announcement?

WikiLeaks

I originally posted this in July. With all of the hubbub in the news I thought that I'd repost.

The controversial website WikiLeaks publishes and comments on leaked documents alleging government and corporate misdeeds.

In this video founder Julian Assange talks about how the site operates, what it has accomplished and what drives him.

I think that people are a bit fascinated by whistle-blowers. Movies like this year's The Informant (see my review of it here) and others like The Insider and The Rain Maker speak to this fascination. There is just something about liars and weasels being exposed.

The video shown in this 20 minute interview is troubling and makes me want to erase it from my memory - I would rather not know about this aspect of war. That said I think that it is not a bad thing to expose the good, bad and ugly of wars, governments and corporations. Predictably Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not appear to share my view when he said:

"Mr. Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing. But the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family."
Interesting that he does not know of any damage that has already been done.

What do you think? About the video? About WikiLeaks.org? About whistle-blowers?

Liu Wei Has Got Talent

If you are down today I suggest that you watch this inspirational video. Following the video are some notes about it from the YouTube page.

Lost his arms in an accident at age 10, Liu Wei from Beijing never gives up living strong.
He managed to do everything with his feet and started to learn to play piano at age 19.
His dream is to become a musician. He is now 22 and just won the China's Got Talent Show on Oct. 10, 2010. In the final, he played piano and sang the song "You Are Beautiful".
Here are a few of quotes from Liu Wei:

"To me, there are 3 things can not be missed in life - air, water and music."

"There are only 2 paths in my life for me - either to die as fast as possible, or to live as brilliant a life as I could."

"I don't feel that I am that different from other people. Normally everyone is used to do everything with one's hands so your hands are more flexible. There is no rule saying that you can't do things with your feet."

"A man should be responsible to his dreams. My dream is to become a great musician."

"I know if I want to do it better than other people, I have to put in more efforts."

Cosby does Groucho

Growing up I watched Groucho Marx doing a game show called "You Bet Your Life". This two part video of Bill Cosby doing a new version of the show had me literally laughing out loud.

The video reminds me a bit of the hilarious Abbot and Costello "Who's on First" routine.

How does Google do it?

Interesting brief video about one of the latest Google products. Don't you think that there is just something weird about Google? How can all their stuff be free? I don't know the answer to that but I do use many of their products.. like Blogger, Gmail, Chrome Browser, Maps, Calendar, Reader and recently I got my second Google Voice telephone number as I move to a new area code this week. Yet I still wonder.. how can Google offer all of this for free.. do they real make that much from advertising? Maybe I shouldn't block all of those ads with my Chrome Browser? How many Google products do you use? Which ones?

Do atheists really want to hear about Jesus?

Casey recently posted the longer version of this rant by Vegas Magician Penn Jillette at his place.. the video I posted is under a minute. I found the idea that atheists want people to witness to them about Jesus a bit disingenuous. In the bigger story Jillette tells about a guy who gave him a bible and how he was touched by the man's kindness.. but in my opinion he blew the guy's message off because of his fundamentalist leaning toward atheism.

What do you think? Are atheists really all that interested in having discussions about faith?

Addict at 10

This short two minute video gives us a brief glimpse into the life of Derek Steele who took his first sip of tequila at age 8 and found himself enmeshed in the world of drugs until he got free when he was 20 years old. With the support of a 12-step program, he found God and left drugs and alcohol behind.

The publisher has offered a free copy of Derek's "Addict at 10" book to three readers. If you would like a copy just use the Contact tab at the top of this page to email me your name and mailing address. I will then forward it to the publisher and they will get the book in the mail to you at no cost. For more information about Derek's journey check out His website.

The Unknown Disease

This video was very hard for me to watch because it mirrors my family's journey quite a bit. My wife Ann also has Neuro-Myelitis Optica (NMO) Syndrome (also called Devics Disease). The onset and progression was different than what Carla experienced in the video but some of the paralytic effects are very similar. I can so relate to this journey of hospital relapses, physical therapy and doctor visits. My prayers go out for Bill and Carla Weller.. asking God to give them miraculous grace.. and to give all of us a cure for NMO.

Sound Bite Reporting

This short video, complements of the folks at Newsy.com, is an example of their attempt to report the news using multiple sources that have differing views. I have watched several of their videos and find their reporting to be an interesting approach to sound bite reporting.. but I am not sure that I need more sound bites - my blog, after all, is full of them

What do you think of news shows that offer the news in edited sound bites? Helpful or not?

The Bloom Box

Interesting 2 minute video. Saw the 15 minute interview a few weeks ago on 60 minutes and was very impressed. From what I gleaned from it this Bloom Box device could eventually take your natural gas feed and turn it into electricity thus removing your need for the Electric Company. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Where is God in the Haitian Earthquake?

I think that this video presents a good response to the question of God and the earthquake.

Straight Talking Senator Bernie Sanders

An interesting eight minutes of dialog on healthcare legislation and the influence of big business lobbyists on US government. The action picks up about midway into the interview. The straight talking Independent Senator from Vermont is quite refreshing

The Nativity Story

A clip from one of my all time favorite Christmas movies. Here is a clip from what I said when I saw it for the first time:
Many scenes moved me at a very deep level and engaged me emotionally. Watching Joseph help Mary give birth to Jesus was an amazing experience. Seeing the responses of Mary and Joseph to angelic visitations was moving. Watching Joseph tell Mary that he believed her and would be a father to Jesus was spectacular.
If you have never seen the movie I suggest that you rent it this Christmas season.

Top 100 Movie Quotes

A great and nostalgic video for anyone who love the movies.
See if you can name the actor and actress who appeared the most.
Also let me know what quote (or quotes) is your favorite.

WOW: 30 Years of Letters to 2,500 Students

Dan Stroup, a humble teacher at Heritage Christian School in Indiana, spends a portion of every evening in his living room, quietly writing birthday letters by hand to every student he has had in class these last 30 years. He mails handwritten birthday letters to students in 60 cities, 36 states and six countries.

The man amazes me. Catch his story in this video and pass this amazing testimony along to inspire your friends.

Freedom Leg: No More Crutches

According to Emma, the gal in this two minute video who broke her foot, the Freedom Leg transfers the weight of her step to her upper leg, enabling her to continue to use the muscles in her leg as she moves around without compromising the progress of her mending foot, which remains in a cast.

Celebrating the Fall of the Wall

Today Germany and the world celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa, the former head of the Polish Solidarity movement, spoke to the gathering (along with others world leaders) and then toppled the first of a chain of giant colored dominoes set up along a 1.5 km (0.9 mile) stretch where the Wall once stood. The first 2 minute video sets up the second 3 minute recording of the dominoes falling.
