WWW: Gun Toting Teachers

In this edition of Weird World Wednesday, I submit to you this Associated Press article:

A tiny Texas district will allow teachers and staff members to carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings when classes begin this month, provided the gun-toting employees follow certain requirements.
...
Trustees approved the policy change last year. For employees to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations; and must ammunition designed to minimize the risk of ricocheting bullets.
...
It isn't clear how many of the 50 or so teachers and staff members will be armed this fall because Thweatt did not disclose that information, to keep it from students or potential attackers.

  2. Toting guns to deter shootings. That just doesn't sit right with me.

  3. Wild West Elementary School!

Sounds scary to me. Are they checking to see if any of those teachers are on medication or have been treated for psychological problems?

  4. I agree with Cheryl on the fact that they need to make sure that the teachers are checked for mental stability. I live in Texas and work at a school. It is scary at times. We have drills for security. Everyone in the police and fire dept and EMT's are prepared and know our drills.

My question is, that if more teachers did carry guns and were of sound mind, I wonder if it would keep people who mean harm away. Would it make them think twice before coming into a school to harm? Would the kids feel safer? There are campus police officers that carry guns with them. That makes me feel safer. When I was in HS, we had a lot of gangs and the officer in our school carried a gun. I liked that fact. If teachers were trained enough and went to training, kind of like police on self defense and such, I think that would be better. If a teacher chooses to carry one. Of course, only the administration would know who is carrying one, because it is conceiled. I, on the other hand wouldn't carry one if our school permitted it, but that is just me.
Sorry I wrote a book, it was my thoughts on the matter.

  5. Thank Heather for the insightful comment.

It does seem to be fitting to label such a school the way Cheryl did - Wild West Elementary for sure :(

This is a very troubling issue..
