Pizza Hut turns 50

The first Pizza Hut, at left, was opened in June 1958 at Bluff and Kellogg streets in Wichita by two former Wichita State University students, Dan and Frank Carney. The building has been moved to the Wichita State campus.

Amazing the things that have come out of Kansas :)

  1. I once heard that the "Hut" part of the name was chosen for the original restaurant because after putting Pizza on the sign there was only room for three letters. Any truth to this?

  2. Well you learn something every day!! today you were the teacher.

The original `` Now that's something.

I think I'll go grab a piece of pizza!!

  3. Don't know nephos.. tried googling an answer for you with no success.. maybe I should make something up :)

  4. Hey Kansas - makes me want to come and join you over there - my question is - are they any good?

  5. KB,
    Found this (among others),

"When they were setting up, they only had room for 25 seats - and the restaurant sign only had space for nine letters. They wanted 'Pizza' in the name, which left space for just 3 more letters. Because the building looked like a hut, Pizza Hut was born."

Not sure of the validity of the source, though. It could be urban legend.

  6. Thanks for the link and the trivia nephos! Have a great weekend!
