Boring TV

This funny cartoon from the folks at the Shoebox Blog reminded me of Sunday afternoon's viewing of The Masters golf tournament.. I watched for a while.. changed the channel then changed it back.. golf is just too boring. On the quazi-positive side I think that it is pretty good viewing if you are doing something else like reading a book or surfing the net.

Some realities shows fit into this boring TV category.. some PBS shows put me to sleep.. TV baseball games are snoozers..and I won't get into some of the weird stuff on the food network or cable news channels.

What do you consider boring TV? And don't tell me how exciting golf is :)

  1. Golf would be at the top of my list of boring TV programming, too. How about foreign language dramas with no English subtitles? Those are pretty hard to watch, too (if you don't understand what they're saying).

  2. Baseball is at the top of my list of boring TV. I can only watch a baseball game if it's the playoffs and there's something better about a night game. There are two problems with baseball, with 160+ games a year, each game itself is meaningless. And, there are very long periods of no activity whatsoever followed by brief spurts of play.

    Golf, OTOH... well, nevermind.

  3. I hate baseball and Golf on TV. Dog shows are bad. Winter Sports and stunt bicycling is bad. Auto and motorcycle racing is bad. As a runner, I do have a guily pleasure of enjoying watching marathons and especially triathalons. Most people hate running, much less watching another person do it.

  4. I think C-SPAN, e.g. watching congressional hearings, etc. has got to be about the most boring. Subject matter possibly could be interesting if there wasn't so much self-important posturing, bloviating, couching, and self-imptressive use of over-the-head vocabularies. It's much like reading my life insurance policy for pleasure.

  6. I remember listening to a blind sports commentator (no kidding) talk about how he prepared for his daily radio sports commentary spot. He taped (before tivo) events and listened to them, taking notes. He said golf was bad, as was tennis. "whack....applause." and "ponk, ponk, ponk, ooohhh". He enjoyed listening to baseball, football, and basketball on the radio because there's a lot of action and the play-by-play helped him "watch" the game.

His commentaries were actually pretty good, considering his disability. I think he kept the job until his dad retired from the board of directors for the radio station.

He was also the organist for the Seattle Sonics in the 1980s. He knew all the refs and many of the players. One time he loaned one of the refs his white cane. The ref used it and some dark glasses as he came out when being introduced at the beginning of the game. The arena exploded in laughter.

  7. Baseball...One of the more boring sports ever invented. I'd rather watch curling. At least that's funny to watch. BTW, I've played curling and it was actually kind of fun.

I must admit that I did watch the Mariners during their Cinderalla year in 1995. I do live in the Seattle area, after all. But by next season Baseball returned to being the game where grass grows.
