Legal Loopholes for No Call Lists

A few weeks ago I had a conversation with a young man who called me on my home phone wanting to ask me some survey questions. I answered some of his questions but balked at many of them. He was a nice guy and I had an interesting conversation with him. When I told him that our number was on the "no call" list he informed me that the list only applied to telemarketers and not survey companies. Reminds me of the new "no call" law for cell phones just signed by Missouri governor Jay Nixon. Like other "no call" laws this new Missouri law doesn’t apply to unsolicited charitable or political phone calls and texts. Loopholes like these drive me crazy. Why should telemarketers be exempted from pestering me just because they work for a survey taker, charity or political group? Anybody else bothered by telemarketers or do you just screen your calls?

  1. Oh they drive me crazy. During the election primary it got rediculous. some times I am able to screen them but a lot get through.
I don't know why No Call isn't for everyone.
If I want to give or talk to someone I will make the call. I'm not waiting for someone to entice me.

    1. Good point Sue. No Call should be the default.

    2. We still have our land line, but I screen. If I don't know the number, I ignore the call. Mostly, we get survey calls. Sometimes I'll take them, sometimes I just hang up.

  3. If a law does not have a loophole, especially one that benefits those in power, is it really a law?

  4. Hi Bob,

When unwanted charity solicitors call, I let our answering machine handle take the call. Later I call them back and use their voice mail (I've yet to get a live person when I call back.) to get our number taken off their call lists. This strategy has meant more peace and a lot less aggravation for me, as the sound of the phone ringing instantly puts me on edge. BTW, if you use a cell phone, there is a separate "do not call" list for that too.

  5. I have found no-call lists almost worthless. Politicians exclude themselves so that at this time of year you robocalls out the ears. The same for any company you've ever had any dealings with. We don't plan to sign up for the cell phone list. We just suspect it will make our number more public for the callers. I think phone companies should provide SIMPLE means for customers to block offensive calls.
