Kudos to Conan!

Just in case anyone has missed it.. I know some of you could care less about television.. and late night entertainment.. the NBC Tonight Show host Conan O'Brien has issued a statement saying he will cooperate with NBC's plans to move him to the midnight slot.. of course it would be 11:05pm here in the midwest.. following a new show that Jay Leno would do at 10:35pm. Here are a few excerpts from Conan's statement:
People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
...
So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.
...
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Kudos to Conan! I gotta believe that either he or Leno will go to Fox and compete against each other and Letterman in that time slot. For the record I'll probably watch Jay for no other reason than he makes me laugh more than the other two. Who makes you laugh the most?

  1. I haven't watched the Tonight Show since Conan took over. I only watched occasionally anyway and I don't find Conan funny at all. If I'm up after the local news, I'll flip over to Nightline. I used to check out both the Tonight Show and Nightline. But, as long as Conan is doing the Tonight Show,it would be Nightline only.

    I watch Leno's show at 10 occasionally.

I guess Conan's getting a raw deal since it appears he was promised the Tonight Show. I really liked Leno as Carson's follow-on though and didn't understand the bizarre move to put what was essentially the Tonight Show into the 10 o'clock slot then try to put on another Tonight Show at 11.

  2. They all have there strengths, Leno is everyman, Letterman alternately cool and totally goofy, and Conan very hip, and yes, appealing to a younger demographic than me.

  3. I like what Conan said. I like his show cause of Max Weinberg but really - I don't watch any of them cause I don't have the tv on that late...for some reason it creeps me out to have it on before I go to sleep, I like quiet.

BUT that said, if I had to pick, I'd pick Jay for the same reason - he's funniest.

  5. LOL.. I understand Heather. Life before retirement (when I rose early) was different for me.

  6. NBC really botched up this one in so many ways. Conan comes across as the only one with any integrity.
