The Problem With Sequels

Guess it has been a while since I saw a great sequel to a great movie. Here are a few examples of the good and bad that I have seen:
  • Godfather II was great.. Godfather III not so much.. maybe if Michael hadn't killed off Fredo and Robert Duvall didn't snub III?
  • Rocky II was pretty good but III, IV and V got progressively worse.. however Rocky Balboa seemed to pull it off.. albeit with Rocky the Geezer :)
  • Indiana Jones.. number 2 was bad.. Sean brought number 3 back to life.. but even a nostalgic guy like me had a hard time with the 2008 version.. but I did kind of like it. Lets hope they don't try an Indy 5.
  • The X Files.. just saw the latest installment.. should have never left the genre of TV.. I had such great memories.. the show was great.. the movies stunk.
  • Die Hard.. hmmm.. can't remember anything about those sequels.. I think Bruce was in them all.. not so sure about Bonnie though.
  • Star Wars.. gotta wonder why Lucas had to ruin a truly great trilogy? We really didn't need to know that much about Darth Vader!
  • The Lord of the Rings - not a bad sequel in the mix.. of course the screenplay and plot were already in place.. but man they were all great!
  • 007.. many of you know that I am a self-professed  Bondaholic.. I like even the bad ones.. yes even "Never Say Never".. which Connery should have said never to. Of course I have not been too happy with the last few.. don't think we need a British version Jackie Chan or Jean-Claude Van Damme.
How about you? What is your favorite sequel? Your least favorite?

  1. I like all the Shrek movies. But the important thing is that I know I, for one, shall hereby and herewith refrain from making even the stupidest porno movie sequel joke. Because, as I'm sure we would both agree, that's just the right thing to do.

  2. Starwars really should have been left alone. The Matrix, like LOTR, seems to have been the exemptions to bad sequels :D

  3. Best sequels: GF2 and Star Wars V.

Even among recent trilogoes, Matrix II and LOTR II paled in comparison to I and III.

The worst, of course is Star Wars II. Even Lucas admitted that he didn't have much of story, but needed to bridge gap between I and III.

  4. Like the Lord of the Rings books, I don't even really consider the 2nd two movies sequels.

The first Matrix movie blew most of us away, while I enjoyed the 2nd two, most of the wow factor was missing.

After several years of therapy I can finally think of Jar Jar Binks without wanting to track down Lucas and beat him senseless.

Highlander 2 was atrocious, but the director's cut was slightly better.

I actually liked Hellboy II more than the first one.

I liked The Chronicles of Riddick as much if not more than Pitch Black.

The Jurassic Park sequels weren't as good as the first, but at the time I didn't care, because the CGI dinosaurs looked so freaking good!

    I think I'm done for now. ;-)

  5. Star Trek 2, the best sequel ever and one of the best movies ever made

  6. I will give you this jrchaard.. without Khaaaaaaan the Trek franchise might have died.. the first movie was really bad.

  7. Bourne sequels
    Star Wars
    Star Trek
    Lord of the Rings
The rest doesn't come to mind
