The Case for 6 Day Mail Service

A few weeks ago President Obama compared the US Postal Service (USPS) with the likes of UPS and FedEx. Saw this cartoon today and it caused me to think about the future of the USPS.. seems like they are eliminating a lot of positions these days.. gotta wonder how long 6 day mail delivery will last.

Up until a few months ago I was an advocate for cutting mail delivery down to 5 days.. then my daughter got me a NetFlix account and now I am not so sure that is such a good idea :)

Apart from NetFlix is there really a case for 6 day mail delivery?

  1. Thank you Missy. How much did you make the check for? I appreciate you support of my blog ministry.

  2. Netflix is the only regular mail I care about receiving.

  3. But what if you could only get that DVD 5 days a week Mike?

  4. I could live with that. It is nice to receive DVDs on on Saturday sometimes though. In addition to Netflix we get movies out of our local library so we always have something ready to watch when we want to. I just went through all the mail that came during our trip. 20% will be shredded, 75% will be trashed or put in the recycling bin, and 5% will be kept.

  5. Good stats Mike.. wonder how similar to others?

Just about all of our bills come via email.. only doctor/hospital bills come via snail mail.

  6. The only paper bill I receive is the water/sewage/waste disposal bill, but I pay it online too.

  7. I guess I am stuck in the Dark Ages and still get the bills by snail mail. Have to admit that a lot of the stuff that's in the mailbox is junk though. Most is shredded as it comes out of the box.
Hate seeing more jobs go by the wayside. Don't know where it will stop.

  8. I've never used NetFlix.

I think the USPS proves that a Public Option for health insurance will not put the private insurers out of business. USPS will deliver overnight or 2nd day for less than Fedex but how many people use USPS and save money?

Instead of complaining when the USPS raises their rates we can always use a private delivery service. What's a letter cost through USPS compared to Fedex? Let's shut down USPS and go private. We don't need no stinking socialized mail delivery. Let's all use Fedex.

I don't receive any bills via mail except from my doctors, my hospital, my garbageman and the guy that cuts my lawn. What's that tell you about health care service providers? Although my health care insurer doesn't send me bills they do send me monthly statements via the USPS because they don't offer a paperless option. That's smart!

The rest of my mail consists of three monthly magazines and a lot of commercial advertisement. Easily 95% of what USPS delivers to me is stuff I didn't ask for and stuff I alway throw away without reading it (credit card offers, refi offers disguished as official government notices, grocery ads, penny saver catalog, which I appreciate only for the crossword and Sudoku puzzles, retirement planning presentation invitations, etc., etc.).

It's obvious to me that the USPS serves the needs of business far more than the needs of the private person. Accordingly, the USPS should charge a higher price for business mail. If business can't afford to pay more to send their catalogs and credit card offers then they aren't adequately cost justified. Let the Free Market determine what's worth the cost of postage.

  9. The Australian Postal Service - is pretty good, it's the contracting of the delivery of larger parcels that is cause for concern - fragile or handle with care has a different meaning in my dictionary.

  10. Thanks for an Aussie point of view Mark! Are firms like FedEx or UPS in your neck of the woods?
