I could dress like the KoolAid man.

In all seriousness, isn't sugar and corn the most subsidized crops by the US government? Seems like they are just re-cooping that on the other end. Why don't they just stop subsidizing these crops?Missyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16638784910676212171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-749955731953911627.post-12553776575526954122010-03-16T08:41:15.412-05:002010-03-16T08:41:15.412-05:00Funny. "Let the smokers pay for it" seems to be a pretty popular sentiment (and no I don't smoke cigarettes).

Everyone should watch Food, Inc. Great film. One thing it shows us is why our trash food is so cheap. It's subsidized like crazy. A tax on sweet drinks (I agree with Mike,- not sugar per se but HFC, too) actually is not a bad idea. It would produce revenue that we could use for better things and hopefully it would discourage people from drinking 2 liters of Mountain Dew a day.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06035489123868573312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-749955731953911627.post-60276304386502066152010-03-16T07:16:53.222-05:002010-03-16T07:16:53.222-05:00I'm not opposed to taxes per se. I even support having my taxes used to assure health care for poor children. But I'm against taxes to modify behavior. Gambling taxes don't slow down gamblers, and government entities just become addicted to them. The same goes for sugar.Joe Baronehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10275991273751678636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-749955731953911627.post-24334256814881964032010-03-16T06:47:45.129-05:002010-03-16T06:47:45.129-05:00I've always said they should tax junk food if ...I've always said they should tax junk food if they are going to tax alcohol and cigarettes. I'd like to see a more specific tax on high fructose corn syrup and other bad forms of sugar and have them leave pure cane sugar alone.

I always thought government jobs paid more because they actually keep up with cost of living increases while the private sector does not.Mike aka MonolithTMAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08385705390882035829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-749955731953911627.post-39243529406482932062010-03-16T06:37:40.051-05:002010-03-16T06:37:40.051-05:00I am not sure what I think about the sugar tzx, Bo...I am not sure what I think about the sugar tzx, Bob. While I have no problem with taxes, per se, actions like this only further complicate what is already a way-to-complex tax code.

To offer a contrarian position, though, much of my taxes today goes to pay for medicare and medicaid, and I have seen many studies that illustrate that obesity is a significant contributor to healthcare expenses. Some states have called this soda pop tax the "obesity tax". Again, still not sure where I stand on this.Ed G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08870533414070848501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-749955731953911627.post-70199817895392432652010-03-16T06:15:52.826-05:002010-03-16T06:15:52.826-05:00Right on, Bob.
